Both of Dundee's senior football clubs have agreed to start using plastic pint glasses in their public bars.

The move is part of city-wide campaign to reduce the number of injuries from drink-related violence.

The plastic glasses, which are virtually unbreakable, are provided free to licensees by the Dundee Community Safety Partnership....

Researchers behind efforts to reduce city centre violence are receiving an award from The Queen on Friday.

Cardiff University aimed to cut drunken crime and injuries in the city using innovative methods such as encouraging pubs and clubs to use plastic glasses.

...Research on injuries involving beer glasses led to the use of toughened glass and plastic in pubs and nightclubs.

The group said this had been linked to a 70% fall in glass assaults....

PLASTIC glasses have meant a trouble free Christmas and new year for pub managers in Scunthorpe.

...Police figures showed a sharp drop in the number of 'glassings' - where someone uses a pub glass as a weapon - and managers said they reduce the potential for trouble.

Eight bars in the town centre area of Scunthorpe are understood to be using the plastic glasses...

Twenty uniformed police officers will be patrolling the Brick Lane area over Christmas.

PLASTIC glasses are to be given to Ribble Valley pubs in a bid to reduce accidents and injuries caused by glass attacks.

More than 3,000 polycarbonate glasses, which are designed to look and feel like normal glasses, will be given to pubs and clubs in the borough's towns after funding from Ribble Valley Borough Council.

The move is part of a campaign to encourage pub owners to use the plastic glasses in the run-up to Christmas in a bid to reduce violent crime.

TIME is being called on booze-related crime in the countdown to Christmas.

A series of measures have been drawn up as part of the clampdown.

Action includes high visibility policing in trouble-spots during the party season, plastic glasses being handed out in pubs and clubs in a drive to curb the risk of alcohol related injuries and taxi marshals will be out patrolling the ranks to prevent problems.

LICENSEES have reported a drop in night-time disorder, one year after a Scunthorpe Pubwatch scheme introduced plastic glasses to the town centre.

The number of glassings dropped immediately after the introduction of polycarbonate glasses with two throughout December 2008 and January 2009 compared with five in the same period the previous year.

...Steve Turner, licensing manager for Humberside Police, said: "The numbers of glass related incidents have reduced, but there are still bottles being used as weapons, but fortunately there have been no serious injuries...

A partnership between university researchers and police in Cardiff to reduce alcohol-related violence has been given an award.

The approach, ranging from looking at pub opening hours, bar design to the use of plastic glasses, has already been adopted by other cities.

..."The immediately obvious solution, which had an instantaneous benefit, was to put pressure on clubs and city centre pubs open late to adopt plastic glasses or one's made from toughened glass."...

The plastics industry has defended polycarbonate glassware in a letter to the British Beer and Pub Association.

...BPF director general Peter Davis wrote: "I felt I should write to you and correct some misleading information which appeared in the media.

"Plastics technology is constantly evolving and can meet successfully almost every application referred to it...

...He said it’s "completely feasible" to supply plastic containers that last longer than glass, are dishwasher-safe, give no 'taint' from the plastic into the drink and weigh and look like glass....

ALL Scunthorpe's town centre venues should adopt plastic glasses, officials have said.

The call comes just after the Home Office announced plans to ban pint glasses outright and replace them with shatterproof plastic versions.

...Pc Steven Turner, licensing officer, said the plastics, known as polycarbonates, were popular with police and licensees.

"We are trying to encourage more and more premises to adopt them, obviously we can't force them and appreciate it does cost a fair bit to change over.

"But once they're bought the indication is that pubs benefit, because with glass more has to be spent on renewing stock, replacing dance floors and there are fewer breakages....

Pub bosses in Washington are being urged to stock up on super-strength plastic glasses in a bid to prevent violent attacks.

Six bars across the area have already hailed the scheme a success, with almost 1,200 of the polycarbonate glasses being snapped up through the Pubwatch scheme.

The glasses said to withstand the weight of a small car are made from the same sort of plastic used in crash helmets and last up to four times longer than normal glasses.

Police are using shock tactics in a bid to get pub owners to serve beer in plastic glasses to avoid people being injured in fights.

Officers have teamed up with the mother of a man who was seriously injured in a pub 'glassing' to try to get the message across.

Marjorie Golding spoke to dozens of licensees from across Fareham and neighbouring areas in a bid to convince them to introduce tough, non-shatter polycarbonate mugs and bottles....

A HOCKLEY bar is the worst in the city for glass attacks, according to officers.

Police say five people suffered head or facial injuries in incidents involving glasses at Revolution, Broad Street, in just over two years.

Pubs in Dundee are being urged to ditch glass in favour of polycarbonates to improve safety despite police admitting glass attacks are rare in the area.

Police have written to all 80 city centre licensees calling on them to trial plastic glasses and have made around 9,000 polycarbonate glasses available for free.

THE glassing of a 28-year-old nursery nurse has led to renewed calls for Poole pubs to ditch glass and serve drinks in plastic.

Lacey Hiscock was left with deep cuts to the face and needed 25 stitches after the attack at Yates on Poole High Street before Christmas...

About 10,000 plastic glasses will be given to licensees in Daventry and South Northamptonshire to help make pubs and clubs safer.

The polycarbonate pints were rolled out across the south of the county during the new year while a "traffic light" system to monitor pubs, which was first trialled in Northampton, has also been introduced.

THOUSANDS of special plastic glasses are to be handed out to pubs and clubs across Hartlepool as part of an on-going safety partnership.

The Safer Hartlepool Partnership hopes the polycarbonate glasses will reduce the number of accidental injuries, remove the opportunity for glass to be used as a weapon and help to maintain a cleaner environment.

The new glasses are harder to break than glass ones and will not produce sharp edges if they are broken.

More than a dozen pubs around the KC Stadium have been asked by police to serve bottled beer in plastic glasses on Hull City match days.

...The Mail understands the letter, addressed from a PC Amanda Houchen, was sent to 14 licensed premises.

It explains how glass bottles were used as projectiles and as a result officers have asked that the bottles be dispensed into polycarbonate containers...

Newbury pub agrees to use plastic glasses after two glassing incidents this year.

CAMPAIGNERS today said they were making good strides in their bid to make drinking safer in Ipswich town centre.

Liquid and Envy nightclub recently became the first venue in the Ipswich to be completely glass-free after converting to polyethylene teraphthalate (PET).

And the campaign has increased momentum with more and more premises converting to varying degrees of polycarbonate use throughout the year....
