Haslingden Bowling Club to use Plastic Glasses.

Haslingden Bowling Club is putting safety first by ensuring plastic glasses are used for the outdoor functions they host.

The polycarbonate glasses have been provided by local Neighbourhood Policing Officer PC Craig Mountford.

Unlike traditional glass pint pots, the polycarbonate ones won't break easily which means they are much less likely to cause serious injury if they are dropped or thrown. However, they are still very similar to traditional glasses in weight and appearance and, according to drinkers who have given them the thumbs up, there was no difference in the taste of their drinks. And polycarbonates keep beer cold for longer...

Plastic drinking glasses launched at Accrington nightclub

A NEW plastic glass campaign has been launched at an Accrington nightclub in partnership with police.

Bosses at Level One nightclub, Warner Street, say using strong new polycarbonate glasses, instead of the more traditional variety, has gone down well with customers, and has also led the club to buy more ‘plastic’ bottled drinks as a result.

Plastic pints for Dundee's football fans

Both of Dundee's senior football clubs have agreed to start using plastic pint glasses in their public bars.

The move is part of city-wide campaign to reduce the number of injuries from drink-related violence.

Researchers behind efforts to reduce city centre violence are receiving an award from The Queen on Friday.

Cardiff University aimed to cut drunken crime and injuries in the city using innovative methods such as encouraging pubs and clubs to use plastic glasses.

Plastic pint glasses in Ribble Valley pubs to help cut injuries

PLASTIC glasses are to be given to Ribble Valley pubs in a bid to reduce accidents and injuries caused by glass attacks.

More than 3,000 polycarbonate glasses, which are designed to look and feel like normal glasses, will be given to pubs and clubs in the borough's towns after funding from Ribble Valley Borough Council.

The move is part of a campaign to encourage pub owners to use the plastic glasses in the run-up to Christmas in a bid to reduce violent crime.

TIME is being called on booze-related crime in the countdown to Christmas.

A series of measures have been drawn up as part of the clampdown.

Scunthorpe licensees hail plastic pints

LICENSEES have reported a drop in night-time disorder, one year after a Scunthorpe Pubwatch scheme introduced plastic glasses to the town centre.

The number of glassings dropped immediately after the introduction of polycarbonate glasses with two throughout December 2008 and January 2009 compared with five in the same period the previous year.

A partnership between university researchers and police in Cardiff to reduce alcohol-related violence has been given an award.

The approach, ranging from looking at pub opening hours, bar design to the use of plastic glasses, has already been adopted by other cities.

The plastics industry has defended polycarbonate glassware in a letter to the British Beer and Pub Association.

...BPF director general Peter Davis wrote: "I felt I should write to you and correct some misleading information which appeared in the media.

"Plastics technology is constantly evolving and can meet successfully almost every application referred to it...

...He said it’s "completely feasible" to supply plastic containers that last longer than glass, are dishwasher-safe, give no 'taint' from the plastic into the drink and weigh and look like glass....

ALL Scunthorpe's town centre venues should adopt plastic glasses, officials have said.

The call comes just after the Home Office announced plans to ban pint glasses outright and replace them with shatterproof plastic versions.

...Pc Steven Turner, licensing officer, said the plastics, known as polycarbonates, were popular with police and licensees.

"We are trying to encourage more and more premises to adopt them, obviously we can't force them and appreciate it does cost a fair bit to change over.

"But once they're bought the indication is that pubs benefit, because with glass more has to be spent on renewing stock, replacing dance floors and there are fewer breakages....

Tough glasses to make pubs safer

Pub bosses in Washington are being urged to stock up on super-strength plastic glasses in a bid to prevent violent attacks.

Six bars across the area have already hailed the scheme a success, with almost 1,200 of the polycarbonate glasses being snapped up through the Pubwatch scheme.

The glasses said to withstand the weight of a small car are made from the same sort of plastic used in crash helmets and last up to four times longer than normal glasses.

THOUSANDS of special plastic glasses are to be handed out to pubs and clubs across Hartlepool as part of an on-going safety partnership.

The Safer Hartlepool Partnership hopes the polycarbonate glasses will reduce the number of accidental injuries, remove the opportunity for glass to be used as a weapon and help to maintain a cleaner environment.
